Description :

This majestic beaded mask honors the eagle and the deer, two powerful characters in Huichol cosmogony. They are both sought after during the yearly Huichol pilgrimage to their sacred place. Santos crafts the copalillo wood mask by hand, carefully detailing Werika the eagle, who the Huichol people regard as their mother. When she is portrayed as having two heads, it symbolizes her role as the intermediary between the gods and her Huichol children. The deer on the cheeks is regarded as their brother, who is a messenger between them and their deities. Santos decorates the chin with jicurí, the peyote flower regarded as sacred.

Santos uses a natural adhesive made from bee's wax to affix each bead by hand. It is therefore important to keep the mask away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

Care instructions: To prevent the tiny chaquira beads from coming loose, do not expose this piece to direct heat or light as it may melt the Campeche beeswax adhesive.
